UN chief renews call for vote delay in Zimbabwe

UN boss Ban Ki-moon renewed his call Thursday for postponing the presidential runoff election in violence-wracked Zimbabwe until conditions for a fair and credible vote can be created.

On the eve of the balloting, from which opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has pulled out, Ban said: "this presidential runoff election should be postponed until such time when we can create fair and credible conditions."

In celebrating the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture (IDSVT), today, Namibia’s National Society for Human Rights (NSHR) condemns the widespread occurrence of torture in Namibia as well as the perfunctory and haphazard fashion in which the Government of Namibia (GoN) carries out its obligations under international law.

Mandela condemns Mugabe 'failure

Former South African leader Nelson Mandela has added his voice to the growing international condemnation of the political violence in Zimbabwe.

SADC calls for poll postponment

MBABANE, 25 June 2008 (IRIN) - Zimbabwe’s presidential run-off election scheduled for 27 June should be called off, regional leaders meeting in Swaziland said on Wednesday.

“If the election were to be held under present circumstances, it would compromise the credibility and legitimacy of the results,” said a statement released by King Mswati III, Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete and a representative of Angolan Prime Minister, Fernando dos Santos.
