Govt prioritises biosafety in genetically-modified farm produce

Cape Town - Government is making biosafety a priority not only in terms of genetically-modified organisms in food but also in terms of food products entering the country's borders.

Chantal Arendse of the Biosafety Directorate in the Department of Agriculture said on Wednesday that while government was treading a fine line between those in favour and those opposed genetically modified organisms (GM organisms), strides were being made in biosafety....

PPI records at an unexpectedly 16.4% high

Pretoria – The year-on-year producer price inflation (PPI) for all commodities in South Africa came at an unexpectedly high of 16.4 percent for May 2008 compared to the 12.4 May 2007.

Statistics South Africa (StatsSA) reported Thursday that month-on-month PPI, representing domestic output, stood at 4.9 percent compared to 2.1 percent previously.

Economists say the figure was well above expectations.

Zim crisis to be addressed at AU Summit

Sharm-El-Shaik – The current situation in Zimbabwe is to be discussed in the African Union Assembly at the 2008 AU Summit being held in Egypt.

Although it had not been mentioned on the agenda of the African Union's Permanent Representative Committee, a report is to be presented following the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Troika’s meeting in Swaziland.

FNB launches FNB/WHS Sport Festival

FNB in collaboration with the Janine & Suzelle Davin Sport Trust are staging the FNB/Windhoek High School Sport Festival from July 3 to 5 at Windhoek High School. The FNB Sport Festival involves U19 school team from Namibia, South Africa and New Zealand.

Nuumbembe delighted with victory

Ali Nuumbembe has expressed satisfaction with his performance against South Africa’s Welcome Ntshingila on Friday which saw him winning the WBA Pan African welterweight title.

Nuumbembe dominated the fight from the start to comfortably win the fight on points. Two judges scored the fight 120-108 in Nuumbembe’s favour while a third scored it 120-109.
