Uutoni loses controversially

Namibia’s Japhet Uutoni suffered a controversial defeat to Lukas Maszczyk of Poland on Saturday.

The score was tied at 5-5 at the end of four rounds, but Maszczyk was adjudged to be the winner after a recount.

Although it was not clear how they reached the final decision, the final decision was most probably influenced after cautions against boxers were taken into account.

Samaria out of 800m

Agnes Samaria failed to qualify for the semifinals of the women’s 800m after finishing fifth in her heat on Friday.

Samaria started off strongly and was in the leading group at the halfway stage. With 200m to go she had even taken the lead, completing the 600m mark in 1:33,33. But Samaria faded over the home straight to eventually finish fifth in a time of 2:02,18.

Her heat was won by Svetlana Klyuka of Russia in 2:01,67, followed by Rosibel Garcia of Columbia (2:01,98)...

Louw fails to make long jump final

Stephan Louw failed to qualify for the men’s long jump final by the smallest of margins after the qualifying rounds at the Olympics on Saturday.

Louw finished eighth in Group A with a best distance of 7,93 metres, to miss out on a place in the final by a mere centimetre.

Mabuza KO’s Naule in third round

Kaizer Mabuza of South Africa retained his WBA Pan African Junior Welterweight title when he beat Namibia’s Jason Naule on a third round knockout.

Mabuza caught Naule on the ropes with a flurry of powerful hooks and uppercuts to knock Naule down to the canvas. An exhausted Naule momentarily raised his head before slumping back down as referee Wally Snowball counted him out.

Namibians finish down the field in women’s marathon

Namibia’s two marathon athletes Beata Naigambo and Helalia Johannes finished 28th and 40th respectively in the women’s marathon at the Olympic Games on Sunday, August 17.

Naigambo finished in a time of 2:33:29, which was only 12 seconds outside her personal best time.

Johannes finished 40th in 2:35:22, which was more than two minutes outside her Namibian record of 2:33:06.
