Climate is defined as a weather average. Both weather and climate refer to atmospheric conditions, but the timeframes are different. Weather describes short-term atmospheric conditions in a specific place - whether Monday next week will be hot and sunny in Timbuktu, Mali, or if it will rain in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

JOHANNESBURG, 31 July 2008 (IRIN) - The world can expect to become about 0.2°C warmer per decade for the next two decades, according to several scenarios prepared by the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change (IPCC). Even if the concentrations of all greenhouse gases and aerosols were kept constant at the levels they were in 2000, further warming of about 0.1°C per decade would still be expected.

The rising temperature has already begun to affect human lives and will continue...

MUTARE, 30 July 2008 (IRIN) - Dereck Gurupira, 50, was bathing in the river near his home in Zimbabwe's Manicaland Province late one afternoon when he saw a woman on the opposite bank begin to undress, apparently oblivious of his presence.

Usually the women in Manicaland's Odzi district, about 55km northwest of the border town of Mutare, wash downstream in a more secluded part of the river, but after undressing completely the woman greeted him by name and then suggested to Gurupira...

Children follow shoppers to South Africa

MUSINA , 31 July 2008 (IRIN) - Zimbabwean children are being drawn to South Africa to run errands and perform piecemeal jobs for shoppers from their own country - who are heading south because of the unavailability of basic goods in their own country.

The South African border town of Musina has become a shopper's paradise for Zimbabweans; these days there appear to be more vehicles with Zimbabwean registration plates than there are with South African ones. The town is also a regional...

Expo to promote Indigenous Knowledge system

Pretoria - A week-long expo to promote Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) will kick off in Pretoria, on Monday.

Science and Technology Minister, Mosibudi Mangena will officially open the expo which will be attended by IKS holders and practitioners from around the country.
The IKS expo is organised by the department, in partnership with the Northern Flagship Institution and other government departments and science councils.
