Civics beat Ramblers 2-0 on Wednesday night to join Orlando Pirates at the top of the log on 35 points.
Patrick Mkontwana pounced on to a loose ball to open the scoring on 63 minutes while substitute Tugela Tuyeni made it 2-0 in injury time when he shot a corner clearance into the net.
Ramblers had numerous chances especially in the second half, but they could not penetrate Civics’ defence, for whom Jamu Ngatjizeko and Erastus Ndjavera were in excellent form.
Civics captain Floris Diergaardt came close early on, but Ramblers keeper Lukas Hashiti saved bravely at his feet, while at the other end, Civics’ keeper Ewan Ofouya punched clear a shot by John Samson.
A long shot by Ramblers defender Dylan Mieze went high over the bar, but it was Civics who looked more dangerous, with a Diergaardt shot being tipped for a corner, while Patrick Mkontwana was just wide of the mark.
Ramblers brought on striker Pineas Jacob for Bradley Wermann in the second half and he immediately made an impression with his pace. He had an early shot saved and then laid on chances for both Nelson Akwenye and John Samson, which could not be converted.
But it was Civics who took the lead when Mkontwana pounced onto a loose ball in midfield and slammed the ball into the net with a fine 25m shot.
There was nearly drama on 77 minutes when Ofouya pulled off a fine reflex save from a misjudged back header by Jamu Ngatjizeko.
Ramblers kept on attacking through Jeremia Baisako, Nelson Akwenye and Pineas Jacob, but they could not penetrate Civics’ defence.
In injury time Civics won a corner and Tuyeni slammed a clearance into the back of the net.
The victory puts Civics level with log leaders Orlando Pirates on 25 points, although Pirates have a better goal aggregate. Ramblers are now third on 34 points.
Civics’ president Helmut Scharnowski said it was a tough match.
“It was a tough match between two teams who know each other well. But I think we were more mature and made better use of our chances. I think Erastus Ndjavera and Jamu Ngatjizeko were outstanding in defence as was Victor Helu in midfield.”
Scharnowski said they were now determined to win the league as well, after they won the MTC NFA Cup last Saturday.
“Now we are in with a good chance to win the league as well. I think we can win our last two matches and then the pressure will be on Pirates,” he said.
