Pirates close in on League Title

Posted 7th July 2008 at 12:35 AM by NamibiaSport
A late goal by Wilfred Coetzee gave Orlando Pirates a priceless 2-1 victory against Eleven Arrows on Saturday to take them to the verge of winning the MTC Namibia Premier League title.

The victory gave Pirates a two-point lead over Civics, who were held to a goalless draw by SKW, while Ramblers are now out of the title race after losing 1-0 to Oshakati City.

In other matches on Saturday, Blue Waters were relegated when they lost 3-1 to Tigers at Khomasdal, while Mighty Gunners survived the chop with a stunning 4-0 victory against Black Africa.

Pirates striker Edian Beukes goes on the attack during their 2-1 victory against Arrows on July 5, 2008.

Coetzee brace gives Pirates victory

At the SKW Stadium, Pirates had more ball possession in the first half, but they wasted their chances. Two freekicks within range by Paulus Shipanga and Donny Isaacs went over the top, while Chepela Chepela also shot wide of the mark.

At the other end, Pirates defender George Tsamaseb cleared a shot by Timoteus Iipinge off the line with keeper Athiel Mbaha well off his line.

Arrows took the lead against the run of play when substitute Sheya Andimba stabbed in a loose ball shortly after the restart.

But Pirates immediately drew level when substitute Wilfred Coetzee dived full length to head in Johannes Seibeb’s cross into the box.

With five minutes remaining Coetzee once again pounced when he stabbed in a loose ball from a corner to give Pirates a priceless victory.

Civics 0 SKW 0

At the Independence Stadium Civics and SKW played to a 0-0 draw in a hard fought match of few chances.

Both sides’ defences stood firm with Bobby Kaapama and Gunther von Hundelshausen keeping a firm check on Floris Diergaardt and Eslin Kamuhanga, while Erastus Ndjavera and Sedekia Haukambe were in fine form for Civics.

Civics did most of the attacking after the break, with Heribert Kapeng saving a shot by Kamuhanga, while Brian Brendell shot narrowly wide.

Floris Diergaardt was a constant danger while Victor Helu also put in some penetrating runs, but they could not break down SKW’s defence.
With two minutes remaining SKW nearly took a shock lead when Arend von Stryk headed in from a counterattack, but the linesman ruled that he was offside and the goal was disallowed.

Civics will be disappointed with not picking up three points and their team manager Paul Stramis admitted that their chances of retaining the title were now quite slim.

“It is now out of our hands. We must beat Fedics in our last match and hope that Mighty Gunners beat Pirates, but with Gunners already safe, I cant see that happening,” he said.

Stramis however said that Civics would lodge an appeal with the Premier League if they don’t schedule the long outstanding Black Africa-African Stars match within the next week.

“The Black Africa-African Stars match will have to be played before the final round of matches next weekend. If that does not happen we will lodge a protest and I am sure that the other clubs will join us on this,” he said.

Mighty Gunners 4 Black Africa 0

Black Africa’s title hopes just about vanished after Mighty Gunners thrashed them 4-0 in Otjiwarongo.
Goals by David Anton, Sageus Narimab and Percy Khairabeb gave the Gunners a 3-0 lead at the break, while Dixuxa Nanuseb put the issue beyond doubt with their fourth goal after the break.

The victory ensured Gunners’ survival in the premier league, much to the delight of coach David Snewe.
“We dominated from the start and Black Africa were nowhere to be seen. We were very happy at the final whistle and celebrated as if we had won the league,” he said.

Although they were safe from relegation, Snewe vowed that they would fight all out in their final match against Orlando Pirates.

“We want to finish higher on the log. We will go all out against Pirates,” he said.

Tigers 3 Blue Waters 1

Blue Waters were finally relegated after losing 3-1 to Tigers at the Khomasdal Stadium.
Tigers took a 2-0 halftime lead through goals by Tangeni Shipahu and Lubigisa Lubigisa, and although Kenny Malgas pulled one back for Blue Waters after the break, Shipahu secured Tigers’ victory with his second goal.

Oshakati City 1 Ramblers 0

Ramblers’ title hopes vanished when they lost 1-0 to Oshakati City in Oshakati.
Muna Katupose headed in a cross by Kulu Pieters midway through the second half for the only goal of the match.

Fedics 1 African Stars 1

Fedics and African Stars drew 1-all in Keetmanshoop on Saturday evening.
Lotten Swartz gave Fedics the lead in the first half, but Stars struck back with an equaliser by Ikuaterua Tjozongoro on 80m.
The result has sealed Fedics' relegation from the Premier League, while Stars remain seventh on 27 points.
