Namibia lost both its matches at the World Junior inline Hockey Championships on July 3 against Germany and the Czech Republic. Namibia will now play out for the seventh and eight positions. Gudrun Denker reports.

Game Six – Germany 5 Namibia 1

Team Namibia entered its sixth Junior World Cup game against Germany with an intensity not seen since the Switzerland game. The winner of this game would advance to play out for positions five and six, while the loser would play out for positions seven and eight.

Coach Josh Blair talks to his team during their match against Germany at the World Junior Inline Hockey Championships on July 3, 2008.

Our players started strongly, drawing first blood and a Namibia 1-0 lead when Tyrone Miles bulleted in an unassisted goal. Our defence continued to hold until the 4:55 mark of the first period, when Germany tied the game at 1-1. The game remained pitched in a defensive struggle throughout the first half, with Germany slipping in a second goal shortly before closure of the period to end the half with a 2-1 lead.

Team Namibia entered Period Two highly motivated, knowing we were only one goal away from levelling the score. Salvos of shots were traded by each side during the opening minutes of Period Two, but it was unfortunately a Team German shot that made it into the net – producing a 3-1 lead for Team Germany with 15 minutes remaining in the game.

As the game proceeded, a tiring Team Namibia could not keep up with the deeper German Team who eventually just wore our team out. The final score-board reflected a 5-1 victory for Team Germany, but the goal differential was not reflective of how closely fought this game actually was. Though a loser of the game, Team Namibia players left the game with pride, knowing they had held a German team for most of the match.

Game Five – Czech Republic 13 Namibia 0

Game Four pitted Namibia against another of the Junior World Cup favourites, the Czech Republic who was undefeated and had crushed all of their opponents to date. Team Namibia put up stiff resistance at the onset, but the Czech offence broke through with its first goal about five minutes into the game. Three additional goals followed before halftime, placing Team Namibia at a 4-0 deficit to close period one.

The second half found Team Namibia confronted by line after line of highly skilled Czech players, all of who were intent on totally dominating their opponent. Superbly skilled, with excellent team speed, and highly motivated, the Czech team was too much for our tired and injured Team Namibia. Following what seemed to be a never-ending second period, the game finally ended with Namibia being down 13-0.

Admirably, our players had only positive comments after the game, recognizing how much they had learned from playing such a talented and structured Czech opponent.
