Samaria breaks Namibian 1 500m record

Agnes Samaria broke her Namibian 1 500m record by one hundredth of a second when she finished seventh at the Athens Grand Prix on Sunday evening.
Samaria completed the race in a time of 4:04,43 to break her former record of 4:05,44 that she set at the Stuttgart Grand Prix in September 2007.

At the Athens Grand Prix, Maryam Jamal of Brunei stormed into the lead and opened up a 20m gap over the chasing pack after 400m. Samaria was at the front of the chasing pack, but with 400m remaining she started dropping down the field when the chasing pack started to close the gap on Jamal.
Jamal managed to hold on for victory over the final 100m sprint to win the race in an excellent time of 4:00,67.
Irina Lishchynska of Ukraine came second in 4:01,61, while Daniela Yordonova of Bulgaria came third in 4:02,37.
Samaria managed to hold on for seventh position in a new personal best time.
It was the third time over the past month that Samaria had broken the Olympic A qualifying time of 4:07,00.
On June 14, Samaria came second in Rabat, Morocco in 4:06,83 and ten days later she once again came second in Jerez, Spain in 4:05,79.
Louw 12th in long jump
Namibian long jumper Stephan Louw also participated in thr Athens Grand Prix but could only finish 12th with a distance of 7,56m.
It was well below his Namibian record of 8,24 that he established in Germiston, South Africa on January 24 this year. Louw recently once again cleared eight metres when he won an event in Germany with a distance of 8,03m on June 25.
