Falcons pull off dramatic victory

Posted 13th July 2008 at 11:53 PM by NamibiaSport
Reho Falcon pulled off a dramatic 19-18 victory against Western Suburbs in a top-of-the-log Club Rugby Premier League clash at Suburbs Park on Saturday.

Suburbs seemed to be heading for victory when they took an 18-12 lead in the second half, but Falcons struck back with a try in the final minute of the game.

Their veteran winger Deon Mouton broke through Suburbs’ backline to score close to the posts and replacement fullback Howard Titus added the conversion to give Falcons a last-gasp victory.

There was not much to choose between the two sides, who weighed up evenly in the forward exchanges. Both teams’ ball skills however let them down as numerous try scoring opportunities were wasted due to handling errors and knock-ons.

Falcons took an early lead through two penalties by left wing Elroy Diergaardt, before Suburbs’ flyhalf Justin Nel opened Suburbs’ account with a penalty to make the score 6-3.

Suburbs went ahead for the first time when centre Llewellyn Winckler went over for a try after a backline move and Nel added a fine conversion from the touchline to put Suburbs ahead 10-6.
Nel soon added another penalty to give Suburbs a 13-6 lead at halftime.

Reho Falcon struck back early in the second half with two penalties by Diergaardt to make the score 13-12 in favour of Suburbs.

But Suburbs stretched their lead through a try by right winger Ryan Witbooi after a full backline move. Nel missed the conversion but Suburbs’ lead was now 18-12.

Falcons came back strongly and Suburbs’ defence eventually cracked in the final minute when Mouton broke through Suburbs’ backline to score close to the posts.

Titus added the pressure kick to give Falcon a late victory.

In other Premier League matches on Saturday, Wanderers were too strong for Jaguars, running out 58-10 victors, while Unam beat Kudus 28-21.
United’s poor form of late continued when they were beaten 37-29 by Rehoboth.

Falcons now lead the log with 34 points, followed by Wanderers on 32 points and Suburbs on 30 points.
