Craven’s good form continues

Namibian cyclist Dan Craven continued his good form of late when he came third in the 175km Inda Grand Prix in Caravate, Italy on Sunday.
After his FidiBC.com team mate Jaro Marycz helped him to win the Crystal Energie Grand Prix on July 19, it was Craven’s turn to repay the favour and he did so by helping Marycz to victory on Sunday.

Dan Craven (second from right) came third at the Inda GP in Caravete, Italy on July 27, 2008.
Marycz won the race in a time of 3 hours 55 minutes, ahead of Italian rider Paolo Tomaselli and Craven, who both followed 12 seconds behind.
Craven made some early attacks and soon joined the leading peleton which opened up a gap of about three minutes on the chasing pack.
Marycz was also among the leaders and at a stage joined Craven and asked if he would help him to try and win the race.
After Marycz had helped Craven to win a week before in France, Craven had no hesitation in helping his team mate this time around.
“He came up to me in the bunch, asked how I felt and then asked if I would work for him today. I glanced over at him and told him that I was entirely at his disposal! After last week there was NO doubt about that!” Craven said.
Craven attacks early
Craven soon got away with eight other cyclists and with 35km to go Craven attacked and broke away in front with another cyclist.
“We immediately opened up a nice gap and were flying along nicely when a motorist came up to us and said that a team mate was following us, on his own. I thought it was the other guys team mate but looked back to see... Jaro! I could not believe it!
I waited for Jaro to catch up and as soon as he reached us, I put my head down and
went, driving with all I had. After all, I knew that I didn't need energy for the final. I was working for Jaro today! All along I could not stop thinking how incredible this was. Merely eight days later and here I was repaying the favour that he did for me last week!” Craven said.
Craven put in as much work as possible over the last 25km to protect and help his team mate, so that he could be fresh over the final stretch.
Marycz takes the lead
On the last climb, Craven put in an attack and although he was quickly caught he continued to set a steady tempo. Marycz waited for the right moment and then took over the lead with about 5km remaining.
Marycz broke free in the front while Craven remained on Tomaselli’s wheel till the end.
“I put in a fake sprint just to please the crowds at the end, but with 100m to go I already sat up and celebrated like mad! What a day! What a day!” Craven wrote on his blog.
