South African players dominated proceedings on Tuesday in the boys singles category at the ITF Junior Circuit South and Central African Championships in Windhoek.

With six of the seven third round matches completed, South African players had secured six of the seven quarterfinal berths.

Benjamin Lock of Zimbabwe in action against top seeded Nikala Scholtz of South Africa on July 29. Scholtz won the match 6-4, 6-2.

The top seeded Nikala Scholtz was too strong for the 15th seeded Benjamin Lock of Zimbabwe, wearing him down with his strong serves to win the match 6-4, 6-2.

Scholtz will now meet compatriot and seventh seed Renier Moolman who beat Alexander Voitov of South Africa 6-0, 6-1.

The third seeded Dimitri Terpizis of South Africa beat the 14th seeded Roy Sherr of Israel 6-2, 6-1 and will now meet the sixth seeded Jarryd Botha of South Africa, who thrashed his unseeded compatriot Wihan Lategan 6-0, 6-1.

The fifth seeded Samuel Omoile of Nigeria was the only non-South African player to progress to the quarterfinals, after beating the ninth seeded South African Marlu Janse van Vuuren 6-0, 6-1.

Omoile will now meet the fourth seeded South African Pieter Schalk Becker who beat Malcolm Mutungamiri of Zimbabwe 6-1, 6-3. Becker won the first boys singles title on the ITF Junior circuit last Saturday when he beat compatriot Jurgen de Jager 7-6, 7-5 in the final.

Namibia’s only remaining hope in the boys singles competition, the eighth seeded Henco Serdyn still has to face the 11th seeded Kyle Rowe of South Africa in the quarterfinals. Their match was postponed due to school exams that Serdyn still had to complete.

The winner between Serdyn and Rowe will face the second seeded Juan de Villiers of South Africa, who beat compatriot and 16th seed Hernus Pieters 7-6, 6-2.
There were also matches taking place in the boys’ doubles and girls’ singles and doubles categories.

Stronger competition

The level of competition at this week’s ITF Junior tournament is considerably higher than the first tournament last week, since it has attracted more of the world’s top ranked junior players.

Last week, the eventual boys singles champion Pieter Becker was the top-ranked boy’s player with a world junior ranking of 453.
This week’s number one ranked player Nikala Scholtz has a junior world ranking of 140, while the second seed Juan de Villiers is ranked 231 in the world.

Christi Potgieter of South Africa is the top ranked girls singles player at this week’s tournament with a junior world ranking of 209, with Namibia’s Riekie Honiball following shortly behind with a world ranking of 218.

Honiball won her first ITF Junior title when she beat Natasha Fourouclas of South Africa 7-5, 6-2 last Saturday.
