42 records at short course gala

There were some outstanding performances at the second short course gala of the season on July 18 to 20 when a total of 42 new national age group records were established.
Christine Briedenhann and Rory Buck, both of the Namibia Swimming Academy, led the way with six records each, while Quinrton Delie of Dolphins Swimming Club produced five records.
Sean Peens and Jean Paul Burger, both of Dolphins, each established four records, while Zanre Oberholzer (NSA), Emile Majewski (Dolphins) and Alex Skinner (Dolphins) each established three records.

Gunther Cloete (NSA) and Byron Briedenhann (NSA) each established two records, while Alex Ray (Marlins), Tristan McDonald (NSA), Jan Erasmus Barnard (Dolphins) and Jonay Briedenhann (NSA) each established one record.

The 12-year-old Christine Briedenhann was in great form in the Girls 11-12 year old category.
In the 50m butterfly she broke her own record of 33,25 seconds with a new time of 31,87, while she also broke her own 50m backstroke record of 35,12 with a new time of 34,19.
Briedenhann broke her own 50m freestyle record of 29,43 with a new time of 29,20, while she broke her own 100m butterfly record of 1:16:47 with a new time of 1:16:36.
She also broke Monica Dahl’s longstanding 100m Individual Medley record of 1:17:14 on two occasions. She first set a record of 1:16:94 in the preliminaries and then set a new record of 1:15:79 in the final.
Buck, Delie dominate
The 21-year-old Rory Buck and the 16-year-old Quinton Delie dominated proceedings in the Men’s Open category.
Buck broke Werner Wagner’s 50m breaststroke record of 30,37 on two occasions with a time of 29,73 in the prelims and 29,56 in the final.
Buck also broke Alex Ray’s 50m freestyle record of 24,48 on two occasions, swimming 24,06 in the prelims and 24,28 in the final.
Buck broke Werner Wagner’s 100m breaststroke record of 1:05:79 with a new time of 1:04:56, while he also beat Alex Ray’s 100m freestyle record of 53,88 with a new time of 52,47.
Delie broke Byron Briedenhann’s 50m backstroke record of 29,51 on two occasions, swimming 29,28 in the final and 28,58 in the prelims. Byron Briedenhann (29,02) and Alex Ray (29,12) also broke the previous record in the prelims.
Delie also broke Byron Briedenhann’s 100m backstroke record of 1:03:42 on two occasions, swimming 1:02:26 in the prelims and 1:02:26 in the final. Byron Briedenhann (1:02:28) and Tristan McDonald (1:03:07) also broke the old record in the final.
Oberholzer shines
It was encouraging to see that several of the younger swimmers established new records.
In the Girls 9-10 year old category the nine-year-old Zanre Oberholzer broke her own record of 1:24:98 in the 100m freestyle with a new time of 1:22:69, while she also broke Regina Hoffmann’s longstanding 50m backstroke record of 40,70 with a new time of 40,57.
Oberholzer also smashed her own 100m backstroke record of 1:39:07 with a new time of 1:27:44.
Great competition by Peens, Burger
In the Boys 11-12 year old category Sean Peens and Jean Paul Burger of Dolphins provided great competition.
In the 50m butterfly event Peens broke Joachim von Alvensleben’s longstanding record of 34,73 with a new time of 34,24, while in the 50m freestyle event both Peens (30,67) and Burger (30,89) broke JP Engelbrecht’s previous record of 31,17.
Peens and Burger once again both broke Marco Meyer’s 50m backstroke record of 38,33. In the prelims Burger swam 36,03 and Peens 37,77, before Burger set a new record of 35,78 in the final.
