Gymnastics qualifiers in Walvis Bay

More than 70 gymnasts recently competed in a national qualifying tournament at Walvis Bay’s Indoor Sport Complex in preparation for various upcoming international events.

The Namibian women's junior gymnastics team that will compete at the African Championships in Egypt: Miche’le Solomons, Leana Kohne, Simone v/d Hoeven, Kirsty v/d Merwe and lika Blaauw.
The event was sponsored by Levo Dolphin Tours.
The competitors represented clubs from all over Namibia, such as Keetmanshoop Gymnastics Club, Crete Gymnastics Club, Excelsior Gymnastics Club, Intendo Gym Club, Otjiwarongo Gymnastics Club, Tsumeb Gimnastiek Klub, Outjo Gym Club, Swakopmund Gym Club and also the hosting club, Walvis Bay Gymnastics Club.
Trials, tribulations and overwhelming successes kept more than 500 spectators on the edge of their seats from early on Saturday morning till after 18h00 when the prizegiving ceremony took place.
Girls, as young as six years old, challenged their counterparts for a medal placing. The older, and more experienced gymnasts were working hard on extremely difficult elements to prove their worth for the selection of the 2010 Commonwealth Games and the 2012 Olympics. Gymnasts such as Kimberly-Ann van Zyl, Cloe Hansen and Ramona Beukes have become well known names in the woman’s artistic arena and have proven their talent and commitment by pulling world class elements out of the leotard sleeves.
At the end of the competition the following national teams were selected:
The SA Games Women’s Artistic Gymnastics team:
Danita Tjombe, Dannii Biewenga, Annerie de Villiers, Margaretha Swart (reserve), Shannon Bosch, Carina du Plessis, Manuella de Waal (reserve), Letitia du Plessis, Nicole Visser, Shinene Steyn, Tanita Human (reserve), Samantha-Lee Gibbons (reserve), Kira Bezuidenhout, Angel Pitsch (reserve), Bianca van der Westhuizen, Gillian Naibas, Caroline de Schmidt (reserve), Elmarie Bosch, Izahn van Zyl, Marie-Louise du Plessis (reserve).
The Zone 6 Women’s Artistic Gymnastics team:
Pre-Junior: Elmarize Oosthuizen, Annerie de Villiers, Dannii Biewenga and Danita Tjombe. Courtney Lind and Margarethe Swart are the reserves.
Juniors: Nicole Visser, Letitia du Plessis and Shinene Steyn.
Seniors: Nonna van der Merwe, Linique Louw, Lauren Jacobs
African Championships in Egypt.
Seniors: Ramona Beukes, Kimberly-Ann van Zyl, Cloe Hansen, Linique Louw and Nonna v/d Merwe

Trmpoline and tumbling team
Meanwhile, 97 gymnasts and 27 judges competed in the second and third qualifying competitions in the men and women’s trampoline and tumbling categories, which also took place at the Walvis Bay Indoor Sport Complex, with Levo Tours once again sponsoring the event.
The Trampoline and Tumbling team for the SA Games Championship was announced shortly after the competition and is as follows:
Philip Roux, Carel Olivier, Rakrl Brynjofsdottir, Ane Rautenbach, Margarethe Swart, Zylia van Niekerk, Francois Rautenach, Miche’le Solomons, Angelique de Klerk, Dannii Biewenga, Mia van Niekerk, Annerie de Villiers, Jivanka Kruger, Herbert Peters, Lika Blaauw and Arno Theron.
