Five records at Short Course Gala

The Namibian winter swimming season got off to a great start when five new records were established at a short course gala in Windhoek on Saturday.
Quinton Delie of Dolphins was in great form, setting a new record in the Boys 15/16 freestyle event. He broke his own previous record of 25,86 seconds with a new time of 25,21.
Delie also came close to breaking three more records.
He won the Boys 50m backstroke event in 29,61 seconds, which was just outside Byron Briedenhann’s record of 29,44, while he won the Boys 200m Individual Medley in 1:17,01, once again just outside Briedenhann’s record of 2:16,61.
In the Boys 100m freestyle, Delie came close to breaking his own record of 56,43 when he won in a time of 57,13.
In the girls 15-16 50m Breaststroke event, Daniela Lindemeier of Marlins broke her own record of 36,33 seconds with a new time of 35,25.

In the Boys 8 and under 50m backstroke event Gunther Cloete of the Namibia Swimming Academy won in a new record time of 51,07 which broke the previous record of 52,46 set by Juan Lampbrecht in 2007.
In the Boys 11,12 50m backstroke, Jean Paul Burger of Dolphins won in a new record time of 36,83, beating Marco Meyer’s longstanding record of 38,33.
In the Girls 9-10 200m Individual Medley event, Zanre Oberholzer of the NSA shattered her own record of 3:39,42 with a new time of 3:20,14.
A lot of depth
Several other swimmers also excelled at the gala.
In the Boys 11/12 50m freestyle event, JP Burger and Sean Peens, both of Dolphins, came close to the record of 31,17 seconds set by JP Engelbrecht in 2006.
Burger won the event in 31,28 with Peens finishing second in 31,68.
Peens also came close to Joachim von Alvensleben’s longstanding 50m Butterfly record of 34,73, winning in a time of 35,57.
In the Girls 15/16 50m freestyle event, Christine Minders of Dolphins was fractionally outside Jonay Briedenhann’s record of 27,98 seconds, with a winning time of 28,00 seconds.
Minders also came close to breaking Jonay Briedenhann’s Girls 15/16 100m freestyle record of 1:00,17, with a winning time of 1:01,08.
Jonay Briedenhann of the NSA came close to breaking her own record of 28,63 seconds in the Girls 17/18 50m freestyle event, with a winning time of 28,69 seconds.
In the Boys 19 and Over 50m freestyle event Rory Buck of the NSA won in a time of 24,87 seconds which was just outside Alex Ray’s national record of 24,48.
Nadine Arlove won the Girls 13/14 50m backstroke event in 35,41 seconds, coming close to the record of 34,46 that Jonay Briedenhann set in 2004.
Jonay Briedenhann came close to her own record of 32,08 in the Girls 17/18 50m backstroke event with a winning time of 32,98.
Byron Briedenhann of NSA came close to breaking his own record of 27,46 in the Boys 15/16 50m Butterfly event with a winning time of 28,46 seconds.
Emile Majewski of Dolphins won the Boys 10 and Under 100m freestyle in 1:22,46, just outside Theo Visser’s national record of 1:21,65, while Rory Buck of NSA won the Boys 19 and Over 100m freestyle in 54,70 seconds, coming close to Alex Ray’s record of 53,88 seconds.
