Ali Nuumbembe has expressed satisfaction with his performance against South Africa’s Welcome Ntshingila on Friday which saw him winning the WBA Pan African welterweight title.
Nuumbembe dominated the fight from the start to comfortably win the fight on points. Two judges scored the fight 120-108 in Nuumbembe’s favour while a third scored it 120-109.
“I am very happy with my performance and everything worked out as planned. In the beginning I just sized him up to see what he had to offer and then I started using my jab,” he said.
“It was a good fight. He was a tough kid and he took so many of my punches. He was a very experienced boxer but I used my skills to overcome him. I hit him with a lot of body shots and I thought he would go down, but he held on a lot and covered himself up well,” he said.

Nuumbembe said he was overwhelmed by the support he received from the 1 000 odd fans who turned up to see him challenge for the Pan African title. From the second round already, chants of “Ali, Ali, Ali” reverberated through the hall as Nuumbembe started laying into Ntshingila and by the latter rounds the crowd was up on its feet more than once as he hammered away at the South African.
“The support from the Namibian public was great, I really did not expect that and I appreciate it very much. After I had been away for such a long time I was amazed that so many people turned up to see me fight. It really motivated me to keep on going,” he said.
It was Nuumbembe’s first fight in Namibia since he returned from England where he spent five years as a professional boxer. He was based in Glossop, Manchester where he worked with trainer Bob Shannon and agent Chad Parker. He went on to win the Commonwealth welterweight title in February 2007 but relinquished his title in his first defence against Craig Watson of England in December 2007.
Nuumbembe said he still missed the UK and all the fans he had made there.
“I am happy to be back, fighting in front of my Namibian fans, but I also miss the UK, where I built up a lot of good relationships. I received a lot of SMS messages from fans there congratulating me after the fight,” he said.
Nuumbembe said his next fight would depend on who his trainer and promoter Nestor Tobias selected, but he was ready to face anyone.
He also revealed that he was planning to marry his long time girlfriend Nangula in August.
“She was very happy that I won the fight. She was very nervous before the fight because it was the first time that she saw me fighting live, but I think now she is fine,” he said.
