Air Namibia Athletics Coaching Course

With the start of the new year, athletics in Namibia got underway with the traditional Air Namibia Athletics Coaching Clinic in Windhoek on Tuesday. The clinic, which has been conducted by Quinton Steele Botes for the past 16 years, once again had a big turnout of close to 300 athletes who took the opportunity to get into shape for the new year.

Namibia’s junior hockey teams did exceptionally well at the National Hockey Series in Paarl, South Africa from December 8 to 12, winning one gold, one silver and one bronze medal. The Namibian U18 girls’ team, coached by Trevor Cormack, excelled against the top provinces in South Africa to win the gold medal.

A Review of 2008

The end of the year is approaching and I have to leave as well to go on a short holiday. I will try and continue to update the website, until my return on January 6, 2009.

I have compiled a review of 2008 which documents the main achievements of Namibian sportsmen and women during 2008.

Namibia second at Youth Games

Namibia finished second overall at the Zone Six Youth Games which finished in Potchefstroom, South Africa last week. The hosts, South Africa were the overall winners with a total of 105 medals (53 gold, 39 silver and 13 bronze), followed by Namibia with 67 medals (16 gold, 2 silver and 29 bronze). Zimbabwe came third with 32 medals (nine gold, nine silver and 14 bronze). Botswana came fourth in the tournament, followed by Zambia, Lesotho, Mozambique, Angola, Swaziland and Malawi.

Namibia tumbles five places

The Brave Warriors’ 1-0 loss to Kenya in last month’s World Cup and African Cup of Nations qualifier has resulted in them going five places down on the Coca-Cola/FIFA rankings released by the world’s football governing body on Wednesday.

The national team has dropped down to 126th in the world rankings. The Warriors did not play any other FIFA-sanctioned match in October apart from the Kenya match which was played in Nairobi on October 6.
