Syndicate Smuggling Deprives Country of Billions

Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Gideon Gono claimed this week that some 2,000 syndicates were smuggling diamonds and gold out of the country.

He called upon the government and stakeholders to help curb smuggling activities so that Zimbabwe could benefit from its own natural resources.

LUSAKA, 19 August 2008 (IRIN) - Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa's death has dealt a double blow to Southern Africa, not only generating fears of possible political instability in Zambia but also concern about the impact on the process of finding a solution in Zimbabwe, according to analysts.

Under the current constitution, which is under review, Zambians will have to head for fresh polls within 90 days.

LUSAKA (AFP) — President Levy Mwanawasa, a trenchant critic of Robert Mugabe who won praise for his handling of Zambia's inflation-prone economy, died Tuesday in hospital in France aged 59.

Mwanawasa, who had been receiving treatment at the Percy Military Hospital near Paris, never recovered after suffering his second stroke in a little over two years at the end of June.
