Girl guides, scouts give Madiba birthday card

Boksburg – A large birthday card made and signed by girls belonging to World Association of Girls Guides and Girls Scouts (WAGGGS) will certainly put a grin on South Africa’s former President’s face.
This is according to his wife Grace Machel who received the card on his behalf.
“I can imagine Tata’s joy and happiness when he receives this beautiful card,” said Ms Machel in Boksburg, Johannesburg on Monday.
“I am happy and honoured to present this gift to him on behalf of the girl guides and scouts worldwide.”
Ms Machel was a guest speaker at the WAGGGS 33rd Conference where she also received the World Citizenship Award, an honour is presented to people outside the movement who have contributed to making the world a better place.
Presenting the birthday card to Ms Machel, Amy van Wezel, 22, said they were happy that Ms Machel was the recipient of the birthday card.
“We have worked so hard to get everything together for Tata Madiba’s wishing card. We wish him many, many, many years to come,” said Amy.
The card contains neatly cut pictures of Mr Mandela and a combination of pictures and key messages wishing him a happy birthday on 18 July.
A special R5 bi-metal coin was also launched on Monday to honour Mr Mandela on his 90th birthday.
The South African Reserve Bank, the South African Mint Company and the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Houghton put the coin, featuring a smiling portrait of the former president and Nobel Peace prize winner, into circulation.
The father of the nation is wearing one of his signature patterned shirts on the coin's face, which differentiates his portrait from the portrayals of other former leaders on coins.
Five million of the coins have been minted and will go into circulation on 18 July as part of the many celebrations of Madiba's 90th birthday.
Showing appreciation during the unveiling, Mr Mandela said: "Today I am richer than yesterday."
In other initiatives to mark the milestone birthday, a range of bangles featuring Mr Mandela's prison number has gone on sale in an attempt to create jobs and contribute to the fight against HIV and AIDS.
A total of 45 artisans and workers are benefiting from the initiative, which is set to raise revenue for the 46664 campaign.
The bangles include 90 platinum and 24-carat gold versions.
About 8 000 of the bangles had already been sold worldwide.
