Durban – The Provincial Champion Schools Tournament, which forms part of KwaZulu-Natal’s School Sport Mass Participation Programme (SSMPP), is set to kick off on 18 July 2008 at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
According to the provincial Department of Sport and Recreation, the recently launched SSMPP will come of age next week with the holding of the tournament.
Launched in the last quarter of 2006, the objective of the programme is to facilitate participation in sport and recreation activities within disadvantaged schools focusing on high crime areas, farm and rural areas and government priority nodes.
The tournament, which is a barometer for the success of the SSMPP, is scheduled to take place between 18 and 19 July 2008 at the university’s Howard Campus.
Qualifying cluster tournaments, held to determine the winning primary and secondary school for soccer, netball and volleyball in each cluster, were held in May earlier this year.
These were followed by four regional festivals in June 2008 to determine the regional champion school in the three codes.
The purpose of the cluster and inter-cluster festivals and provincial tournament is to afford learners from SSMPP schools with the opportunity to participate competitively from district to provincial level and to identify the champion schools.
One of the main objectives is to get as many learners as possible to play sport through the provision of sports equipment, trained sporting coordinators and other associated support.
The primary schools will compete in the under 14 category and the secondary schools in the under 19 category.
Approximately 336 learners and 60 educators and volunteers will participate in the festival which will be attended by 100 VIPs and 500 Spectators.
As a start 159 schools, mainly from the rural areas, formed part of the SSMPP and the number of school beneficiaries have grow each year until all disadvantaged schools are reached. - BuaNews
