Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Gideon Gono claimed this week that some 2,000 syndicates were smuggling diamonds and gold out of the country.
He called upon the government and stakeholders to help curb smuggling activities so that Zimbabwe could benefit from its own natural resources.
Those involved in the smuggling activities were depriving Zimbabwe of billions of dollars in much needed foreign currency, he said at the ZimTrade Annual Exporters Conference in Harare on Wednesday. "Zimbabwe is too rich to be poor," he was quoted as saying in The Herald.
