Kempton Park – The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality announced on Monday that it has laid the foundation for a booklet detailing opportunities for local entrepreneurs to benefit from the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The booklet will allow entrepreneurs to take advantage of the array of business opportunities related to the 2010 soccer spectacle.
The booklet, which will serve as an entrepreneur’s guide, focuses on the tourism industry including hotels and accommodation, entertainment, tour operators, hospitality and the services sectors.
“It gives a brief background of why there is a need of the listed services and how businesses can access those and the contact people in case of further information,” said the municipality.
Launching the booklet at a workshop at Emperor’s Palace on Friday, Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Ntombi Mekgwe said: “Ekurhuleni is ready to play its part in ensuring that South Africa delivers the best ever 2010 FIFA World Cup.
“[Using the World Cup to] turn the tide against poverty and underdevelopment by mobilising the people of the region.
“The 2010 FIFA World Cup will bring a number of opportunities that are not linked to football and will create a lasting legacy in infrastructure investment, integrated public transport, tourism and arts and culture – the list is endless.
“We believe the world cup will broaden local participation in the economy and put the country firmly on track with our objective of halving poverty and unemployment by 2014,” the mayor said.
Various stakeholders such as FIFA’s accommodation and hospitality body MATCH, the Department of Trade and Industry (dti), the Gauteng Tourism Agency, among others, addressed hundreds of delegates from both established and emerging business.
Presentations to the delegates focused on issues like hotel and Bed & Breakfast grading requirements, outsourcing and Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) business opportunities.
The municipality’s Empowerment Director for Economic Development Mzwandile Masina said Ekurhuleni wants to position itself as an investment destination of choice.
“… to do this it needs to empower its stakeholders with key information giving them a competitive edge in their fields,” Mr Masina said.
Reflecting on the launch of the booklet Oupa Khwebulani of Khwebulane Construction said that while it was all well to entice entrepreneurs with abundant opportunities, SMMEs need government to give them a chance to prove themselves.
“We do appreciate the step taken by Ekurhuleni Metro and we hope that it will not just end here as we need the municipality to continue helping us going into the future,” said Mr Khwebulani.
