SADC summit faces boycott if Mugabe attends

Botswana has threatened to boycott the annual SADC ordinary summit if Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is allowed to attend.

The 28th ordinary summit is scheduled to take place on the 16th of this month in Johannesburg.

Botswana Foreign Affairs Minister Phandu Skelemani says if Mugabe is invited to the summit that could give an impression that he is the legitimate president of Zimbabwe.

Botswana does not recognise Mugabe's presidency and wants Zimbabwe...

Johannesburg - South Africa’s first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela, has been described as Africa’s greatest leader by Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Briefing reporters at the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Johannesburg on Thursday, the Liberian President described Mr Mandela as a selfless leader who was committed to improving other people’s lives.

SA starts celebrating Madiba's birthday

Johannesburg – The City of Johannesburg has called on the public to take part in Nelson Mandela's 90th birthday celebrations this month, by taking a tour, visiting an exhibition, or other events, to acknowledge the famous resident.

The Parktown and Westcliff Heritage Trust has organised three day-long bus tours in July, Madiba's birthday month, to four of the famous places he is connected with in the city, according to the city’s official website....

Hundreds seek refuge at the SA embassy

HARARE, 26 June 2008 (IRIN) - More than 200 supporters of the Zimbabwean opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), including women and children, are camping in the grounds of the South African embassy in the capital, Harare, hoping to get refugee status. They say they are trying to escape the violence unleashed by the militia of ZANU-PF, the previous ruling party.

Police have set up roadblocks on all roads to the embassy, apparently to stem a suspected tide of asylum...
