Challenges posed by high food prices

While food prices have been stable or have fallen in relation to our incomes for much of the past thirty years, the past two years have indicated clearly that the era of cheap food is over. Rising food prices place a severe burden on the poor and government must intervene to support the needy in facing higher food prices.


However, higher food prices also provide an opportunity to profit from producing more food for our people.

Manuel to head panel assessing IMF governance framework

Pretoria – Finance Minister Trevor Manuel has been appointed as the chairman of the committee of eminent persons which will assess the decision making framework of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Managing Director Dominique Strauss-Kahn of IMF on Thursday announced the appointment of the committee which will also investigate and advise on any modifications that might enable the institution to fulfil its global mandate more effectively.

Johannesburg - A new R2.3-billion central terminal building at the OR Tambo International airport outside Johannesburg opened this week.

SA’s second quarter GDP rebounds to 4.9 percent
