Booklet outlining road regulations for tourists to be released

In an effort to reduce deaths and injuries on South Africa’s roads during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the Department of Transport will soon release a roads regulation information booklet for tourists, writes Luyanda Makapela.

The communication booklet will give tourists a clear indication of the expectations of drivers and also details of the Road Accident Fund (RAF) regulations.

Over 6 000 senior citizen to graduate in Literacy Programme

Ulundi – More than 6 000 senior citizens from KwaZulu-Natal, including a 105-year-old grandmother, will graduate in the provincial Masifundisane Adult Literacy Programme on Monday.

The 6 000 graduates form part of a group of 30 000 learners, from various parts of the province, who successfully completed the programme hosted from November 2007 to June 2008.

Johannesburg – Education Minister Naledi Pandor has urged universities to do more to help first-year students adjust to the new academic learning and teaching styles they experience when they reach the tertiary level.

Rise in number of matrics registering for maths, science

Johannesburg – The majority of Grade 12 students this academic year have registered for maths and science subjects, says Education Minister Naledi Pandor.

Briefing reporters in Johannesburg on Monday, Ms Pandor said: “This academic year sees the largest number ever registered for maths and science in Grade 12.

“We hope this will give us growth and progress in science and related fields.”

Gauteng to open 55 new schools this year

Johannesburg - More than 50 new schools will be opened in Gauteng this year and 150 science laboratories refurbished in previously disadvantaged communities, says Gauteng Education MEC Angie Motshekga.
