Joburg switches on 2010 countdown clock

Johannesburg – The Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Amos Masondo, has unveiled the City’s 2010 Countdown Clock at the Metro Centre building in Braamfontein on Thursday.

With just over 600 days to go before the first match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup kicks off, Mr Masondo has urged Joburgers to rally behind the city to make the event a success.

He said each day was a challenge as the world cup approached, reports Joburg.org....

Limpopo’s best-performing school honoured

Barberton - School principals, teachers and pupils in Limpopo have been encouraged to follow in the footsteps of a Limpopo school that has produced a 100 percent matric pass rate for the past 13 years.

Limpopo Education MEC Dr Aaron Motsoaledi was speaking during a gala event held in Thohoyandou this week to honour the teachers of Mbilwi Secondary School.

Beijing - The global financial crisis is likely to cause increased mental health problems and even suicides as people struggle to cope with poverty and unemployment, the World Health Organisation warned Thursday.

Hundreds of millions of people worldwide are already affected by mental problems such as depression and bi-polar disorders and the current market meltdown could exacerbate feelings of despair among people vulnerable to such illnesses.

Dow Jones average dips more than 7% on panic sell-off

New York - The Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped more than 7 percent on Thursday as panic sell-off dominated markets.

Investors worried that higher borrowing costs could make carmakers, insurers and energy companies the next victims of the credit crisis.

The high borrowing rates cast doubts that money would flow into other parts of the money markets, such as commercial paper, and free up the clogged markets to all businesses to keep humming.
