Media Advisory from the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA)

Johannesburg - April 19 2008

IANSA, the global movement against gun violence, has won a court order to prevent a consignment of arms, including AK-47s, rocket-propelled grenades and mortar rounds, on a Chinese ship from being transported overland through South Africa to Zimbabwe. IANSA is now appealing to the governments of SADC, especially Angola, Mozambique and Namibia, to also prevent the arms cargo.

Apparently ths hip is now on its way to Luanda, Angola. I would not be surprised if it tries to dock in Walvis, too, and I'm sure there are people who are keeping their eyes peeled for this. It would be a shame and a disgrace if we allowed this cargo to be offloaded and transported to Zimbabwe via the Caprivi strip. I understand the solidarity and close historic links between SWAPO and ZANU-PF and the close friendship between Mugabe and Nujoma, and so there is every possibility of this happening.

But I would urge our government strongly to resist this because the end-result is that the world will see us as supporting Mugabe's waning, desperate and increasingly violent regime and we would allow the weapons that will inevitably be used to perpetuate the reign of this brutal, undemocratic regime to reach the country.

Remember, it appears that the MDC now has widespread popular support, so it is reasonable to claim that the ZANU-PF and Mugabe regime is now illegitiamte and has in fact staged a de facto coup.

Apparently ... note apparently ... there are now Chinese or North Korean soldiers (armed and all) doing the rounds in Zim, and if this is indeed true we are getting but a glimpse of things to come in our region ..... remember the voices that were sceptical about the sun rising in the East, and all that is good and benevolent coming from China? Remember, and think hard my people, for even if this particularrumour is false, it is neither inconceivable not improbable. We all should indeed be worried....

Reports that a score of Chinese soldiers have been seen in Mutare, eastern Zimbabwe * based, largely, on the testimony of hotel chambermaids * might yet prove false. Chinese officials have denied that their troops are there, and the 'soldiers' in question could conceivably be private security for some Chinese business interest.

But in the context of recent civil unrest, reports of bi-hourly patrols alongside Zimbabwean security forces make that interpretation look rather optimistic. Security guards don't normally patrol the streets * - even less so in 'regalia' * - and they don't stay at the Holiday Inn.

And the presence of the Red Army on the streets of any African nation would constitute one of the biggest crises of the decade, uniting the twin headaches of African bad-governance and Chinese foreign policy.

So what are the Chinese up to? Is the West being sent a message?

Hopefully not. To parry scrutiny of their own domestic problems, China's entire foreign policy * in Africa especially * is founded on principles of non-interference. Most Western diplomats don't like it, and many don't really believe it; hitherto, however, it has been unflinching and predictable.

But if the West decides to push China off the fence, there's no knowing which side they'll land. Zimbabwe is emphatically not the place to put this to the test.

It is too much to hope that the Olympic torch party have got lost on their lap of Africa. Instead we should take comfort in the fact that the Chinese presence in Mutare is so ostentatious. If they decide they mean business, the Red Army won't arrive in their No. 1's, nor walk down the main street.

There was a photo of some Chinese bigwigs attending the Zim Independence celebrations in one of the online newspapers over the weekend ...........

That is a sad state of affairs, Chinese, let alone Asians think very little of blacks, they do not even value their own lifes. what could africa posibly gain from people who make their own work hard for 10 yrs for a bowl of rice? It is time that the whole southern africa meets, brainstorms and actively get involved with this Zim issue, if the 'chinese can do it, we can do it!

So now that it appears that the ship won't anchor in Luanda to offload its cargo, could it be Walvis Bay? Would be THE only other choice, would't' it?

Comerade_007,

I'm with you. I am also urging our government to refuse entry to the ship carrying arms for the illegitimate government currently terrorizing Zimbabwe. Clearly we respect the sovereignty of every country in the region, but we cannot allow our land to be used to transport firearms and weapons to a repressive and illegitimate government.
