Default Cahora Bassa supplies Zimbabwe again with Electricity

Maputo – Electricity from the Cahora Bassa dam on the Zambezi began flowing to Zimbabwe again on Saturday, after the Zimbabwean power utility ZESA had paid off some of its debt. The dam operating company, Hidroelectrica de Cahora Bassa (HCB) had demanded payment of 10 million US dollars out of a total ZESA debt of about 19 million dollars.
Juliao Pondeca, the advisor to the HCB board on strategic and commercial development, said on Saturday that the ten million dollars has now been paid and that electricity supplies to ZESA resumed at zero hours on Saturday.

Now I don't want to sound too jaundiced, but the question arises in my mind whether these US$ 10 million are not the same that NAMPOWER paid over to Zimbabwe for Hwange?????

Is it a valid question or not?

Default Quite possible

In the murky world of business affairs and transactions in our part of the world this is not impossible. Any question is valid, if it is asked with the right intent. I share your scepticism, but we also need to be careful not to make wild assumptions.

The chickens will come home to roost on this one, too, and not in the distant future either.
