I am probably nit-picking (again), but the quality of English at UNAM does not seem all that great ........... Last edited by Oneword; 11th February 2008 at 12:36 PM. Reason: correction

My vote goes to the Polytechnic for at least trying to teach our youngsters skills they can use to start their own businesses, or have something practical to work with. UNAM spews out people with too high expectations, too few jobs to go around and very few practical skills to apply in a businesssetting. It's a mindset you find around the world: I've been University and have a degree in this or that and now I deserve a job, surely. Is that what we need to build our young Republic?

As long as people expect the (sometimes dubious) graduation certificate to do the work for them, we will not really progress. Once people realise that the degree is nothing but an entrance ticket to the world of work and that they themselves are supposed to do something; well, then we can talk of getting ahead and getting somewhere .....................................

Yes, but still UNAM need to review some curriculum and set it to the standard because some graduate cannot perform after employed due to the fact that what they studied could be not be relevant to the Profession, e.g. Librarian/Information Worker. If you disagree with me just do your research you will agree with me one day.

I agree wholeheartedly, Tuhafeni - so often University curricula are simply too academic and not work-related. The Internet has surely revolutionsed many jobs, including Librarian/Information Worker, and is the University teaching students this revolution? What do you think? Are our librarians prepared for the digital revolution that is sweeping around the globe; the fact that many documents are now being digitised and stored in data warehouses, as opposed to paper warehouses.

Do not nit-pick. UNAM is in the business of preparing Namibia's rulers. Do they need to be well educated. Why? There are honoraries out there. Such as Dr. so-so. This do not need to speak, leave alone speak for a purpose. Just rule, aint that enough.

Why should I be proud of UNAM? In the beginning it was an institution whose certificates, diplomas , etc., were - many, many years ago - recognised by many major universities in Europe, etc. Now one even has to do an extra year just to keep up with certain SA elite tertiary institutions. There many, better things, to be proud of ................................. Last edited by Oneword; 14th February 2008 at 07:42 PM.

Most viewpoints reflected are true. It is true also that Polytech graduates seem more equiped in practical terms than UNAM. There are also other external factors why this can seem the case. Quite often academic performers go straight to university for further studies whereas polytechnic, which were mainly diploma studies would attract those who were not necessarily the best performers, because they may feel they have a better chance in being accepted in terms of minimum requirements. Most often than not, the average performer would have taken entry level jobs while gathering funds to go for further studies, while above average students would land a bursary with good marks straight out of schools. It is then further the respective institutions of higher learning to provide these learners with amble theoretical knowledge. It is also equally important that the employment market has to accept the responsibility to groom the results of the tertiary institutions as they have proven aptitude and can be then trained into their jobs. For someone to have a degree means simply that they are caapable to do the work, provided they get the necessary guidance from those who are now expereinced hands, thus businessess and governments should not expect magic from such graduates. You will find those who had to do your basic office jobs, or any other entry level job will prosper at getting the hang of things once they obtained qualifications, but not all studnets and or graduates have had the same opportunity and backgrounds. In terms of students expectations, it is time that the labour market meet some of these as it is equally unfair to want to pay someone peanuts simply because they have no work experience, as they had to pay for the tution to which will enable them to become the experts in your business. If the labour market takes into consideration the fees that brough this qualified hand to their doorstep, then students and or gradfuates will no doubt equally meet thme half to strike some kind of win win realtionship. Having said all that of course each individual case has it merits, but I will agree that UNAM does not embrace the global change in the way business is conducted due to technology and thus fail to incorporate relevant curricula into their study offerings, whereas polytechnic, seem to do better in that sense.
