NAMIBIA: Nampower announcement on power cuts

As announced earlier, NamPower will make use of load shedding as a measure to address the shortage of electricity. As is practice, NamPower customers (Regional Electricity Distributors, municipalities, mines and NamWater) will be in formed in advance about possible load shedding. The general public will in turn be informed by their service providers.

The public should take note that there will be no total blackouts unless in emergency e.g. lightning or damaged lines.

We urge the public to verify information. A load shedding schedule is available on the NamPower website (NamPower - Powering the Nation and Beyond) and is updated regularly.

Meanwhile, NamPower requests its customers to use electricity efficiently and responsibly by implementing the following energy saving measures in order to assist us in managing the demand-supply situation in Namibia:
  • Businesses are requested to turn off all nonessential lighting and office equipment during the day and overnight.
  • Residential consumers are encouraged to use electricity efficiently by keeping lights off in rooms which are not occupied.
  • Use hot water sparingly.
  • If air conditioning equipment are to be used during this period, they should be used efficiently
  • Switch off geysers when you get home from work, during the electricity peak period, and switch them back on later before you go to bed.
  • Switch off appliances in stand-by mode such as hi-fi systems, video and DVD players and other electronic devices and limit the use of pool pumps.
  • Use microwave ovens rather than stoves.
The situation is being monitored and is under control. We will keep all stakeholders informed about any further developments such as unplanned outages or reduced supply to consumers.

The regional shortage of power alluded in this press release exposes the shortcomings of the SADC as a body to address regional issues. This shortage has been repdicted many a times, by many people and yet nothing significant has been done from a regional perspective, and in time, to address it. Instead of spending its sparse funds on building additional generating capactiy in Namibia, Nampower has embarked on questionable ventures to save to ill-fated ZESA in Zimbabwe.
