| The NEF welcomes the interest of Government in the matter, particularly that Government quotes from the SADC Protocol on Culture, Information and Sport, to which it is a party. This protocol encourages governments to create an environment to ensure that media ethics and media councils are in place, with the emphasis that they be created by the media for the media.
On 4 December 2007 NEF issued a statement that deliberations on the proposed Media Council will continue to take their course. The NEF on 25 January 2008, at its own request, received a briefing on experiences of the South African Media Council by the South African Media Ombudsman, Mr Joe Thloloe, when the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the NEF conducted their joint workshop on improving media liaison.
The NEF, a recently-constituted body, has its doors wide open to meet with any individuals, groups or organisations concerned with matters relating to the maintenance of press freedom and free speech in Namibia in keeping with Constitutional guarantees and adopted regional and continental protocols.
But the Namibia Editors’ Forum remains absolutely opposed to any unilateral Government-imposed initiative and would reject any attempt in this regard. To set up a Media Council is a lengthy and ongoing process which requires thorough and professional media consultation.
