Question Oshakati: "the capital of shebeenland

This topic appears in the New era of 04 /09/2007 and reading the whole story it touches me and feel worried about the capital city of the northern regions. This is more on the sun-rising aspect particularly among the youth. On my point of views I feel pit and embarased, as youth are the future leaders. will they be able to lead effectively if they spent 24 hours drinking. What are your opinion? Does something should be done before early?

This alcohol consumption is very worrying. I agree Tuhafeni. It is a good thing that there is no alcohol for sale in this online Shebeen At least nobody can say Shebeen is giving our country a bad name!!

One thing is that these youths, I think, are bored. There is just nothing for them to do like they do in youth centers in other parts of the world. I suppose it is a matter of money and resources, but somethig has to be done.

It's not a problem only in Namibia, this alcohol consumption with youths. Like I know in UK this is also a really big problem. They call it binge-drinking. But in Europe and USA they have youth centers with climbing walls, martial arts classes, libraries... they try to engage these youths and keep them away from mischief and drinking.

We also need to make absolutely sure that Shebeen owners don't sell alcohol to under-age youths. The youths must show valid ID to prove they are legally able to purchase alcohol. So there is big responsinility on grown-ups also like partents and police and Shebeen owners to tackle the problem .

Some youthes will always prefer to go drink, but many don't -these need to be engaged.

It would be interesting to find out what the Ministry of Youth and Sport is doing anyway? What do you think should be done, Tuhafeni?

this is true what comrade007 says that the shebeen owners must see whether youths are allowed to buy liquor. and the police must also visit shebeens and check why youths drink and take them home of they are not grownups. my hoep is the conference that is coming up will come up with measures to be implemented by locla communities.
