Durban - The “20 Centres for 2010” campaign, which aims to raise funds to construct Football for Hope centres across the African continent, was launched on Sunday ahead of 2010 FIFA World Cup Preliminary Draw.

Five of the centres will be located within South Africa as the host country and another 15 will be built across the continent.

Adding their support to the campaign, FIFA's six official partners who are Coca-Cola, Adidas, Emirates, Hyundai, Sony and Visa have all pledged to donate $500 each every time a goal is scored during the world cup qualifying matches.

Each of the planned centres will be equipped with classrooms, healthcare facilities and a mini-pitch, providing a place for youngsters to play as well as give them counselling, health and educational services.

According to a statement released by FIFA, it will be the first time that the goals scored during the qualifying competition will not only bring joy to the fans but also give to hope to children in Africa.

”In the 2006 qualifiers, a total of 2 464 goals were scored by the 194 participating teams at an average of 2.91 [goals] per match. If the strikers of the 200 teams taking part this time round are on song, this pledge will generate over $1 million for the construction of Football for Hope centres."

Speaking at the official launch of the campaign, FIFA President Sepp Blatter said the campaign emphasises the power of football far beyond the boundaries of the pitch.

"With the help of football fans, celebrities and sponsors, we want to build 20 Football for Hope centres to deliver on our promise to give back something substantial and leave a lasting legacy well after 11 July 2010."

Local Organising Committee (LOC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Dr Danny Jordaan called the launch of the campaign a truly momentous moment for African football.

“We at the organising committee have always believed that hosting the first world cup in Africa is about far more than football.

"It is about leaving a meaningful legacy for the African continent for many years to come. The 20 Centres for 2010 campaign truly reflects our goal to make a real difference for all of Africa.

"This campaign is a very concrete step towards giving thousands of youngsters the chance of a better future."

The centres will be managed by established and recognised non-profit organisations that use the power of football to promote positive social changes.

During the world cup, many of the centres will be transformed into football hubs, with plans to broadcast the tournament's matches live on giant screens. After the world cup event the centres will continue to be used to serve the local communities. - BuaNews
